About Kids Count

From the number of children living in low income households (over 40%) to the number of high school students who graduate on-time in four years (less than 50% for those identified as economically disadvantaged) and from elementary schools with large populations of children from low income families (five schools with over 90%) to the resulting elementary reading scores in these schools (less than 60% of the level of the top six schools), children and families in Alachua County face many financial and educational challenges.

School districts, parents, and the community must find ways to positively impact our children to provide future generations with the best opportunity for the success that comes from education. Alachua County is doing many positive things to try to impact the children of our community, such as The United Way Success by Six initiative, focused on ensuring children are healthy and ready to learn when they enter kindergarten, and The Reichert House, serving at-risk male teenagers with educational opportunities, life skill training, and structured support.

Kids Count in Alachua County, Inc. (Kids Count) is a non-profit organization focused on elementary school students who need help reaching their full potential. Kids Count supports, creates and grows educational programs that enhance academic performance, improve self-confidence, and build social skills. Kids Count supports programs that feature the following concepts:

Kids Count was founded in July 2007 by five people who have been active in service to the children of our community and is supported by Trinity 4 Kids, The Junior League of Gainesville, experienced educators, and community volunteers. Donations and volunteers are needed to help Kids Count serve 100 children through the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years.
